Unite to lead a project to promote the Andaman region as a world-class tourist destination. Pilot initiative with five villages across Phuket

The Department of Community Development (CDD) of the Ministry of Interior of Thailand, together with the local community, traveled to Phuket for a press conference to unveil a plan to raise the standard of local catering services . The goal is to elevate and promote the Andaman region as a world-class tourist destination.

The Governor of Phuket Narong Woonciew, Ms. Mukda Limnukul, Director of the Community Development Department (Strategic Division) and Mr. Krisada Tansakul – Advisor to the President of the Southern Section of the Thai Hotels Association (THA) were the guests of honor present. Two Iron Chefs from Thailand, Chief Suvijak (Mond) Kanghae and Chief Saritwat (Earth) Wanvichitkun, also participated and contributed to the discussion.

“Raising Local Food Service Standards to Promote Andaman Region as a World Class Tourism Destination” is a project launched to develop and connect local village attractions to the tourist community. It is also about building and forging a network of community leaders, being a model for developing the potential of local community tourism, and generating income at the community level in line with sustainable tourism. This project will also link the tourist community with the local community and villages. Training programs to share wisdom on developing outstanding agricultural products, including Phuket lobster, local snakehead fish and pineapples, are part of this project.

The following five villages were selected by local community leaders for this pilot initiative:

  • Coconut Island Village, Village No. 6, Koh Kaew Sub-district, Mueang Phuket District
  • Ban Palai, Village No.3, Chalong Sub-district, Mueang Phuket District
  • Ban Pa Klang Chip Village, Village No.9, ThepKrasattri Subdistrict, Thalang District
  • Baan Ma Nik, Village No.7, Si Sunthon Subdistrict, Thalang District
  • Ban Tha Chatchai, village no.5, Mai Khao sub-district, Thalang district

These five model villages will participate in a range of planned activities through which they will learn about the community’s contributions to tourism, how to generate or increase income and how to play a role in contributing to a strong and sustainable economy. This is in line with the aspiration to raise the level of local food service and promote the Andaman region as a world-class tourist destination.

This project is in line with Thailand’s national strategy to realize the vision of a stable, prosperous, sustainable and developed country. The development of this project is also in line with the philosophy of self-sufficiency economy of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej which is a central tenet for all Thais.

As the main development framework for the next two decades, six strategies are outlined to develop and support six different areas. It is about long-term stability, improving competitiveness, developing and enhancing human potential, creating opportunities and maintaining equality, growing a quality of life respectful of the environment and the improvement and balance of governance.

The “Raising Local Food Service Standards to Promote the Andaman Region as a World Class Tourism Destination” project aligns with these strategies.
