Applebee’s® recognizes restaurant performance, innovation and community engagement at annual franchise conference


GLENDALE, Calif .– (COMMERCIAL THREAD)–Last week, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar® held their annual franchise conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, to celebrate triumphs, recognize excellent restaurant performance and community engagement, and outline plans for future growth and performance.

During the conference, Applebee President John Cywinski announced the launch of the Bill Palmer scholarship in honor of the late founder of Applebee, Bill Palmer. This new scholarship program aims to award 100 scholarships per year to current Applebee restaurant team members and their children. The program was established by Neighborhood Restaurant Partners, Palmer’s former franchise group, in his honor.

“Since its founding, Applebee’s has always focused on its people and made a positive impact on our neighborhoods, and that’s because of Bill,” said Joe Langteau, CEO of Neighborhood Restaurant Partners. “Bill loved this brand and gave back to those who believe in it. This new scholarship program will allow team members working for Applebee and their children the opportunity to continue their education.

Current Applebee team members and their children who wish to apply for the scholarship can visit for more information. Applications will be accepted from December 1, 2021 to January 31, 2022. The first group of scholarship holders will be informed of their award by April 1, 2022.

“Bill was a true pioneer and an icon of the industry,” said John Cywinski, president of Applebee’s. “Most importantly, he has been a champion for our exceptional catering teams who represent the Applebee’s brand day in and day out, under difficult circumstances. I can’t think of a better legacy for Bill than providing annual college scholarships to deserving team members and their families. He would be very proud of this program.

In addition to announcing the new scholarship program, Applebee’s this year recognized franchisees who are committed to brand success, customer service, operational excellence and community engagement.

The main winners of 2021 included:

Restaurant General Manager of the Year

Applebee’s recognizes that the most important people in its organization are the CEOs who lead the more than 1,500 restaurant teams across the country. At this year’s conference, Applebee’s recognized the top 16 restaurant general managers in its system: William Reed as CEO of the Year 2021. A member of The Rose Group for 20 years, Reed runs the franchisee’s Roosevelt Blvd. location in Philadelphia, Penn. and two ghost kitchens in downtown Philadelphia. Reed is the first to achieve the best service results from Applebee at two different sites and has trained over 100 managers who consistently achieve high service results. Reed is recognized by his team for leading each shift with energy, enthusiasm and responsibility. Abe Gustin Franchisee of the Year: Apple American Group

This award, in honor of the man who helped Applebee’s become one of the country’s most iconic casual dining brands, recognizes a franchisee who embodies what it means to be Eat well and Do good in the neighborhood. This year’s franchisee of the year is American Apple Group (AAG) for his ability to successfully serve Applebee, its team members and communities, especially during one of the most challenging years for the brand and the industry. In the face of Covid’s ongoing shutdowns and state openings, AAG has grown from one of the toughest franchise groups in the system to one of the fastest and most successful sales leaders. Lloyd Hill Neighbor of the Year: Doherty Enterprises

This award, named after one of the brand’s historic leaders, celebrates an Applebee’s franchisee who has shown a great deal of love, compassion and care to their neighbors through a variety of causes, activities and initiatives. This year’s recipient is Doherty Enterprises, a franchisee whose commitment to its communities has never wavered. By building relationships, holding team members accountable for giving back, and engaging with their community on an ongoing basis, the Doherty team has donated over $ 900,000 to their neighborhoods. Bill Palmer Heart of Applebee’s: neighborhood restaurant partners

This award is named after the founder of the Applebee’s brand and recognizes a franchisee who has demonstrated the greatest commitment to an individual cause or organization over the past year. The 2021 recipient is Neighborhood restaurant partners (NRP). The team of PNR has proudly partnered with several organizations in their communities to provide ongoing support for the vital cause of donating blood in the four states in which the franchise operates, participating in over 260 blood drives.
